Ceilings

Johanna uses the combined techniques of Faux Finishes and Trompe L'oeil in her ceiling treatments. Painted ceilings are one of the most intriguing of canvases, dating back as far as the 17th century when they were widely seen adorning the palaces of Europe.

Murals and Trompe l'oeil

A French term which means “trick the eye,” Trompe L'oeil is sometimes called illusionism. This unique style of painting gives the appearance of three-dimensional or photographic realism. It has flourished since The Renaissance, and can be playful or intellectually serious.

Murals are large paintings, most commonly created on expansive walls in private homes, as well as on public buildings. Johanna strives to create a realism that fools the spectator’s eye into thinking they are looking at a genuine three-dimensional image. She recently completed a mastery training course, and will be continuing to pursue this passion in the years to come.

Sculptural Ornamentation

A decorative wall finisher is not just an artist, but a well-trained technician who understands the emotional impact of color and design, as well as the technical aspects of paint and plaster application, for superior craftsmanship and lasting results.

Authentic Italian Plasters

Johanna's Design Studio provides installation of Authentic Italian Lime Plasters, better known as Venetian Plaster.

Because they are natural products, these elements will bond over time and harden back to their original stone / texture state. It actually improves in appearance over tim, and has what is called a natural healing process that can repair natural cracking or splitting that could occur naturally over the years due to weather or other natural environmental issues.

Pricing

“How do you determine your pricing?”

This is usually the first question we get from potential clients. We completely understand that budget is usually the most pressing factor involved in your decision to purchase hand-made artwork such as murals and wall-finishes. Like all custom-made products, they are created to match your specifications and are thus all unique situations. There are many factors involved in determining the pricing for a commission. These factors include size, timeline, complexity of design and location.

When asked that question, our answer is usually...

“Well, that depends. Let us ask you a few questions...”

Once we get a better understanding of your needs, wants and budget, we can put together a proposal which includes 1-3 design sketches or sample boards, which will not only solve your decorating problems and address your concerns and questions, but will also fit within your budget. We usually come up with several options that you can choose from, and we take the time to explain the steps involved in each option.

Some general notes on pricing:

• A 50% deposit and a signed estimate proposal are required to schedule work.
• Pricing may be adjusted higher for complex and rush jobs.
• Discounts are available for large and multiple orders.
• Any changes to the original proposal will be reflected as a change order.

Other Considerations. Our pricing reflects these additional factors:

• What is the level of detail and complexity of the artwork or faux finish?
• Is the artwork a large piece (over 100 square feet), or something smaller?
• Are there portraits involved?
• Does the design require extensive research, models, and/or travel time?
• Does the client already have a design concept, and viable reference materials?
• Is the project a wall space, or a custom canvas? Is it on furniture or cabinetry, which will need to be sanded or refinished?
• What is the quality and stability of the surface to be finished? Does it need surface preparation, patching, priming, or a color base?
• Where is the surface located? Is it a stairwell, or a ceiling? Is scaffolding is needed, must it be custom-built?
• Will an option be to paint the mural work on canvas, and have it installed by a professional wallpaper hanger?
• Where is the site of the project? Is travel and hotel stay required?

Contracts and Scheduling. After the client approves the rendering or sample board, Johanna's Design Studio signs the contract, and schedules a starting time. All jobs are on a first-come, first-serve basis, and are only scheduled after the deposit is received. If you are on a deadline, please let us know this in the planning stage. We are sometimes booked months in advance.
